Aspects
Master the major and minor aspects — the angles that define your chart's dynamics.
Major Aspects
An aspect is the angular relationship between two planets in the birth chart, measured in degrees of the ecliptic. When planets form specific angles to each other, their energies blend, clash, or support one another — creating the dynamic tensions and harmonies that make your chart uniquely yours.
The five major aspects are the most powerful and widely used in astrology.
☌ Conjunction — 0°
A conjunction occurs when two planets are at the same degree of the zodiac (within ~8–10° orb). Their energies merge and intensify — this is the most powerful aspect. Whether it is easy or challenging depends on the planets involved. Sun conjunct Jupiter is expansive and fortunate; Sun conjunct Saturn can feel heavy and limiting, but builds tremendous endurance.
⚹ Sextile — 60°
A sextile occurs when planets are 60° apart. It is a flowing, opportunity-bringing aspect — harmonious but requiring some active effort to realise its gifts. Where the trine gives talent effortlessly, the sextile offers opportunities that reward initiative. Sextiles bring cooperation, ease of communication, and creative collaboration.
□ Square — 90°
A square occurs when planets are 90° apart. It is the aspect of creative tension — friction that demands growth, breakthrough, and resolution. Squares are not 'bad'; they are the engine of achievement. They create drive, ambition, and the need to overcome obstacles. Many of the world's most accomplished people have prominent squares in their charts.
△ Trine — 120°
A trine occurs when planets are 120° apart — always in the same element. It is the most naturally harmonious aspect, indicating natural talent, ease, and flow. Planets in trine support each other effortlessly. The potential risk of trines is complacency — talent so natural it may never be consciously developed.
☍ Opposition — 180°
An opposition occurs when planets are directly across the zodiac (180° apart), always in opposite signs. Like the Yin-Yang, oppositions represent polarity seeking integration. There is tension, but also the potential for beautiful balance when both sides are honoured. Oppositions often describe outer tension — projection onto others or being pulled in two directions at once.
△ Trine — 120°
Natural flow — these energies support each other with ease and grace.
